2017

Posters, Pre-paid phone, Landline, Psychoanalysis

In March of 2017 I plastered posters that said,

"I Want to Talk to You About Guns".

In April of 2017, I spoke to a Vietnam war Veteran from my hometown about guns and what they meant to him. I took our conversation and removed any identifying aspect of this man's identity as well as my own voice entirely to provide viewers and listeners with one side of an intense conversation that they could fill the silence with their own relationships to guns and this man.

The phone rings incessantly until picked up by a viewer following which they hear this man on the phone. As soon as the phone is hung up again the phone begins to scream only only ceasing when picked up to this veterans whispers over the phone.

I wanted to try to use guns as a catalyst to understand where the root of animosity and difference lays more generally between societal groups. What was revealed was a complex character that complicated the caricature I had in my mind.
